Esuvat’s Journey: Empowering Maasai Girls

Meet Esuvat, a resilient Maasai woman whose life story serves as a beacon of hope. Born into a traditional Maasai family, Esuvat faced adversity when her dream of education was challenged by an arranged marriage. Despite the obstacles, her determination to break free and pursue education fueled her escape.

Escaping a Forced Marriage:

Esuvat’s journey took a dramatic turn at 13 when, after completing primary school, she faced pressure to marry. Despite enduring a forced marriage ceremony, she cleverly stayed with her family for three years until forcibly taken to her new husband’s family. Enduring abuse and realising this was not the life she wanted, she knew she had to fake compliance, and on  the third day an opportunity  to run away presented itself. A chance encounter with a compassionate woman in a church marked a turning point, setting her on a path toward freedom at the age of 14.

Education as Liberation:

Esuvat’s thirst for knowledge led her to technical college and later a Maasai school, earning her the 8th position out of 208 girls in the interview. A friendship with a Chinese student on exchange opened doors to higher education. Financial challenges didn’t deter Esuvat, who obtained a government loan to study human resource management and business resource management. During term breaks, she relied on friends and teachers for accommodation.

Luck favoured Esuvat as she secured a job at a safari company, creating jewellery and bags for extra income. This experience laid the foundation for her future endeavours.

Establishing a Safe House:

Esuvat’s mission extended beyond personal success. Witnessing her siblings face similar challenges inspired her to create Eripoto, a safe house for Maasai girls facing forced marriages, rape, and pregnancy. Utilising her social security fund at the safari company she was able to build accommodation and make her dream a reality. .Registered as an NGO in 2022, Eripoto currently shelters 23 girls, offering meals, counselling, and educational support.

Educational Initiatives:

Esuvat’s impact  now extends to several schools in more remote areas.  She initiated a sewing skills program for young women, aiming to make school uniforms more accessible. Esuvat envisions expanding her efforts, with plans for a larger  safe house facility to accommodate up to 200 girls.

Addressing Cultural Challenges: How Chupis Can Make a Difference

Esuvat actively confronts cultural hurdles, notably Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), an enduring issue despite its illegality. Through educational videos and school discussions, she strives to eradicate harmful practices and empower girls to challenge societal norms. Here’s where Chupis steps in:

During her school workshops, Esuvat encourages girls to share their challenges and questions. Remarkably, 97% of these revolve around menstruation. Recognizing this need, Chupis is eager to establish a partnership. In Maasai communities, girls lucky enough to use cloth during their periods face challenges due to limited resources. Chupis aims to collaborate with Eripoto, providing washable period pad sets and offering menstrual health training. In areas lacking water access, the struggle intensifies, hindering girls’ ability to attend school during their periods. Breaking the taboo around menstruation is vital, and Chupis endeavours to support Eripoto in empowering Maasai girls for a healthier and more informed future.

A Call for Support:

Esuvat’s initiatives rely on diverse support, including GoFundMe campaigns and partnerships. The goal is to build a larger facility accommodating up to 200 girls, providing education, vocational training, and a haven for those in need. Esuvat’s journey embodies resilience, determination, and a commitment to empowering Maasai girls, challenging societal norms, and fostering hope for a brighter future.
